From the Desk of the CEO
I read an article last week about 3 bad habits that entrepreneurs and business leaders naturally develop over time, and I want to encourage you to not become a statistic. The first bad habit is frequently using the words “I don’t have time right now.” When will you ever have more or less time? The truth is time is all we have, and we must plan and better prioritize the time we have to accomplish more goals.
Another bad habit the article addressed was letting your mind drift when others are talking. Many visionary and entrepreneurial minded leaders struggle to stay focused. While some of the greatest ideas come from vision casting and daydreaming, reel it in when others are present. People have an innate need to be heard, validated, and valued. Try to maintain eye contact, overcome your desire to interrupt, and be an active listener when talking with both personal and professional connections.
And lastly, do not fall into the trap of thinking that in order to get something done right, you must do it yourself. This is a common issue for many entrepreneurs. Our tendency is to take the bull by the horns and handle things ourselves. However, by doing this, we often put ourselves and our staff at a disadvantage. If you can’t trust your staff to do things right, then you may want to evaluate who you have working for you. I always tell my team to “give your job away.” Stay focused on learning more skills and taking on more responsibility, but make sure that you are always helping others and equipping them to make difficult decisions and to handle more complex tasks.
